Hi Laura, why did you decide to open a publishing house, with all those already present in Italy? For us at Nero Cafè - and I speak in the plural because without my colleagues Daniele Picciuti and Marco Battaglia, but also Francesco Lo Polito and Biancamaria Massaro none of what I am about to tell you would have been possible - deciding to launch an editorial brand was almost a natural passage. In two years we went from a simple information blog to a cultural association, opening up from the web to the printed paper, first with Knife magazine and then, from June 2012, with books. An evolution dictated by passion and the awareness that genre fiction in Italy must be valorised.
We haven't thought about who is already there, about the very high number of publishing houses that do - or try to do - what we do too. We had something to offer and we are trying to do it in the best way possible. What do you publish and in what formats? We have Phone Number Data various series that embrace all areas of genre fiction - crime fiction, noir, horror, weird - and we will soon launch a non-fiction series with a "black" tone. Among our titles there are also some anthological collections born from competitions and selections that we curated as a Cultural Association. And, contrary to what people say about reading short stories in Italy, they are among the titles that have given us the most satisfaction.
By the end of the year we will also turn to the classics, especially those that are difficult to find on the market today or have been misrepresented in translations. And then to genre fiction for children, a very low age target, but always very attracted to "mystery" books. Also coming out soon is my manual on publishing. A sort of survival guide aimed at authors, readers and aspiring book professionals, in which I explain a little about how things work, for better or for worse. So far we have dedicated ourselves to paperback, although we are starting to think about digital versions of already published titles, and two free ebooks are available on our store. Tell us about this new challenge in publishing.
